Implemented project – Machakos WaterKiosk®
Machakos, also known as Masaku is a town in Kenya, 63 km (39 mi) southeast of Nairobi which is surrounded by hills. Most of the water used in the town comes from boreholes and springs. Residents have been forced to walk long distances in search of water. Because of water scarcity, residents in Machakos have turned to rivers, shallow wells or other sources which are contaminated with pollutants.
Machakos WaterKiosk is located at Masaku school of the disabled, where it provides water to the needy school and the surplus is sold to the community. The waste water from the system is being recycled and used for fish farming and vegetable farming. The produce from the farm are used to supplement the school diet. The system produces up to 20,000 liters of fresh drinking water in a day, powered by 9.3kW of solar.
