24/7 water supply - Shimoni
Shimoni is a port village and tourist destination in south eastern Kenya near the border with Tanzania and directly across from Wasini Island. This small town is known for its British colonial ruins and slave caves which are the focus of attraction for several community-based projects.
Few years ago, access to clean drinking water was difficult and expensive. A few vendors ferry water from Kidimu, 14 kilometres away, by pickup truck and motorcycle, for sale mainly to the 5,000 residents of Shimoni.
A 20,000 liters per day Waterkiosk powered by 9.3kW of solar array was installed for the community to access fresh hygiene water at their comfort throughout the year.
